Captain Rick’s ‘Round-the-World’ Walking/Bicycling Trek to combat HBP

In 1999, at age 52, I was diagnosed with HBP (High Blood Pressure), placing me at an increased risk of heart attack and stroke. My doctor urged me to develop a healthier diet (less fat, cholesterol, salt, sugar, alcohol) and a daily exercise routine.

On New Years Eve in 1999, I made a resolution to begin eating healthy and walk a mile or more every day for exercise. It is a resolution that I have faithfully fulfilled over the many years since.

The death of my father from a heart attack a couple of years later fortified my resolution. I sharpened my diet and increased my daily walking routine.

In 2005 I bought a bicycle and added a bike ride to my daily exercise routine.

On New Years Eve, preceding 2006, I expanded my resolution to walk/bicycle the equivalent of once around the world … 25,000 miles. With only a few thousand miles logged, I knew this was a very tall resolution that seemed endless and impossible … but, it was a goal that I was bound and determined to achieve.

I logged my miles every day since the beginning of my trek in 2000. In 2009 I began publishing my progress. I did so to recognize my difficult achievement, but more importantly to remind me that I had a long way to go and to help give me strength to carry on … and to give courage to the many people who have HBP and ‘walk in my shoes’. I am now in my second last year for completion of my 25,000 World Trek. What once seemed like an impossible, endless goal, is now just beyond a few more bends in the trail. I anticipate completion of my World Trek in 2020.

I have worn out about 20 sets of shoes walking 10,000+ miles during my World Trek, now in its 20th year. The best wearing set achieved 767 miles. They were inexpensive Dr. Scholl’s. Several expensive shoes wore out in less than 200 miles, proving that cost does not equal endurance. The expensive shoes also proved to be among the least comfortable. The shoe heels and soles are usually the first to fail. I am currently rotating 6 sets of shoes ranging from almost new to over 200 miles so my feet experience varying levels of newness and mileage each day. I add a new set of shoes to the rotation every 50 miles. The 4 newest sets of shoes are Wolverines purchased at DSW for about $60. I found them to offer the best comfort and wear, regardless of cost. The oldest set has almost 200 miles and still feels like new. The heels and soles show little wear. I install Dr. Scholl’s Double Air-Pillo Insoles in every new set of shoes and replace them every 100 miles. They increase comfort and reduce wear on the heels and soles of the shoes.

I have worn out 2 bicycles and many sets of tires, biking 11,000+ miles during my World Trek so far. My third bicycle, a 29” Mongoose Ledge 3.1, already has 4000 miles on it and still rides like new on its second set of tires … FlackJacket Hardrock’rs. I LOVE riding my Mongoose.

People have asked me how I am going to celebrate the crossing the finish line of my 25,000 mile World Trek in 2020. I tell them … “if I am fortunate to make it, the next mile I walk or bike will be the first mile of my next World Trek.”

Captain Rick: It was shortly after Donald Trump announced his run for president that I knew in my heart he was going to go all the way. I sensed the strong movement among Americans who longed to ‘Make America Great Again’ way back when FAKE NEWS and the GOP were fast asleep, content with the political cancer in DC.

Unlike todays FAKE NEWS journalists who mostly communicate via social media … Captain Rick, a REAL NEWS journalist actually walked the streets and trails to talk face-to-face with real people to find out how they were thinking and feeling. That is why Captain Rick knew that a revolution was brewing in America. That revolution thrust Trump into the White House and shocked FAKE NEWS and the GOP. It is time for the GOP to learn from its mistakes and promote the election of candidates who support the Trump movement towards Making America Great Again.

Over the past 18 years I have worn out over 20 sets of shoes walking 9000 miles, with the best pair achieving 767 miles, an inexpensive pair of Dr. Scholl’s. Several expensive pair ‘bit the dust’ after a couple hundred miles, proving that cost does not equal endurance. As an experienced walker and engineer, I hope to blog about the design of today’s shoes in a future blog post. Shoe companies could learn an abundance of knowledge.

I have worn out 2 bicycles and many sets of tires, biking 10,000 miles. I am riding my third bicycle, a 29” Mongoose, already on its second set of tires. Captain Rick: I now ride a new 29” Mongoose bicycle. It replaces my previous 26” NEXT, which served me well for 5052 miles along my 25,000 mile “Round-the-World Trek” to battle high blood pressure. It all began as a New Years resolution way back on 1/1/2000, at age 52, to exercise for heart health and help lower the high blood pressure that I was diagnosed with. I started walking several miles a day…every day. In 2005, I purchased a bicycle to compliment my walking. Somewhere in the process I raised my goal to achieve the equivalent of walking/bicycling once around the world (25,000 miles). I continue to enjoy a daily 2 mile walk and 3 mile bicycle ride almost every day. I am in the final leg of my journey and hope to reach the finish line sometime in the early 2020s when I am in my mid 70s. My greatest desire is that this blog post will inspire others to make a commitment to exercise for heart health.

Features of the Mongoose 29” Ledge 3.1 Mountain Bike

  • Light weight aluminum frame and alloy rims
  • Front and rear suspension
  • Front disk brake, rear shoe brake
  • 21 speed Shimano derailleur
  • SRAM front/rear twist shifters
  • Front quick-disconnect tire

Riding a 29” is an entirely new bicycling experience

I am amazed at the difference 3” in wheel diameter makes. Every time its wheels go around , the bike travels nearly a foot farther than a 26”. There is something about the ride that makes it feel like I am riding a big ‘machine’…rather than just a bicycle. Mongoose has done an excellent job producing this great ‘riding machine’.

Mongoose

Made by Pacific Cycle, which is owned by Dorel Industries, Mongoose has been around since 1974 and is one of the world’s top bicycle manufacturers. Its line of bikes includes BMX, comfort, hybrid, mountain, and road bikes. Available in specialty bike shops, sporting goods stores, and mass-market stores, the bikes range in price from $300 to $350 for comfort bikes, $280 to $800 for mountain bikes, and $2,700 for its road-bike model.

Captain Rick: 10,000 Hits…a new milestone for my blog…Atridim News Journal. If each of those hits were worth one dollar, it would look like this…

image

To me, the 10,000 hits received are worth much more. I sincerely appreciate each and every hit…including those by people in more than 50 countries…and especially from the 100+ who follow my blog.

I began this blog in May 2010. My original words included:

“I have an interest in news, economy, government, photography and much more. I enjoy writing about them to share with you. I will be commenting on news of interest from my town of Gilbert, my state of Arizona,  my country of the USA and the world. I hope you will join in our conversation.”

My blog remained with few posts, due to a lack of ‘guts’, until September 2012, when my late friend Bill Whitney, who was battling cancer, gave me the courage to blog.

I invited Bill to tell the story of his journey battling cancer on a blog I would create for him. I told him that it would be great therapy for him and help many who ‘walk in his shoes’. After several months of procrastination, he agreed. In August of 2012 he began telling the story of his journey…word by gripping word. His courage led me to energize my blog in September 2012.

Atridim News Journal reached 5000 hits in August 2013, over 3 years since the first blog post…and another 5000 in the past 10 months. Captain Rick appreciates his viewers and followers.

The remarkable increase in viewing stats of over 5000 in the past 10 months, tells me I am doing things right and makes me want to continue to do my best to present good blog material. It also helps me appreciate everyone who has viewed my blog…and especially those who follow my blog…and special appreciation for my late friend Bill who gave me the inspiration to blog. Captain Rick presents a humble ‘Thank You’ to all.

I joined Facebook in January 2010. I confess…at first I was not a ‘happy camper’. I did not really see its benefit. It looked to me like a bunch of people ‘yacking’ about much of nothing. Later, when I was beginning to take a ‘deeper look’, Facebook pulled the rug out from under me with the new look of the ‘Wall’. I did not like it. I was one of millions to complain. I came very close to quitting Facebook. Somehow, I managed to hang on. I began to see that the changes were actually not so bad after all.

During the later half of 2012, I began to investigate ways to use Facebook to promote my WordPress blog…’Atridim News Journal’. I discovered several local private Facebook Groups and became a member. The conversation taking place in the groups amazed me. There were real people talking about real subjects of interest, conveying information that was of real value. I joined in the discussions and began to have real fun. It completely changed my outlook of Facebook. In the process, I have connected with many new friends, some of which it trust will be friends for the rest of time.

I discovered how Facebook Pages work by joining many. I got brave and created my own: Atridim News Journal in which I have been sharing all of my WordPress blog posts to. It is a way for Facebook members to connect to my WordPress blog.

I developed a burning desire to create my own Facebook group. Thus the birth of the World Think Tank. Created about a year ago, it was a struggle to get it energized with members willing to discuss important issues that face our world in a truly ‘open’ Facebook group. I have gained a valuable education from the members around the world that post and discuss the issues facing our world. I am pleased to share that several discussions, including ‘Immigration’ are ‘on fire’ in the tank. I utilize thoughts from our ‘World Thinkers’ to fuel new posts on this WordPress blog.

Our world is getting smaller. People are connecting like never before…including me. And so, I thank Mark and his team for creating a new means for me to connect with my friends around the world. Go Mark and team!

Captain Rick on Facebook welcomes you to be a new friend.

Captain Rick: Astronauts onboard the International Space Station restored the cool via space walks in December 2013.

As an engineer and lifelong follower of NASA, the Space Shuttle and the International Space Station (ISS) programs, I am compelled to report on this remarkable event. I was fortunate to personally witness a Space Shuttle launch from Cape Kennedy in the early 1980s. The shaking of the ground and thundering across the sky was the most awesome experience of power that I have ever witnessed.

I created an ‘Atridim Widescreen’ photo crop of a recent space walk (compliments of a NASA high definition original) for full screen viewing enjoyment on your HDTV or widescreen computer monitor.

Details of the recent Space Walk:

Expedition 38 Flight Engineers Rick Mastracchio and Mike Hopkins wrapped up a 5-hour, 28-minute spacewalk outside the International Space Station at 12:29 p.m. EST Saturday, December 21, 2013, completing the first in a series of excursions aimed at replacing a degraded ammonia pump module associated with one of the station’s two external cooling loops that keeps both internal and external equipment cool.

On Sunday, Dec. 22, NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins tweeted of Saturday’s spacewalk, saying, "Wow… can’t believe that is me yesterday. Wish I could find the words to describe the experience, truly amazing."

A second spacewalk to install a replacement pump module occurred on Dec. 24, 2013. NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins, Expedition 38 Flight Engineer, participates in the second of two spacewalks, spread over a four-day period, which were designed to allow the crew to change out a faulty water pump on the exterior of the Earth-orbiting International Space Station. He was joined on both spacewalks by NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio, whose image shows up in Hopkins’ helmet visor.

Get connected to what is happening onboard the ISS. Watch the ISS pass over your house.

I subscribe to NASA’s ISS ‘Spot the Station’ email alerts and enjoy watching the ISS frequently pass over my Arizona Oasis during the early dawn or late dusk sky, when it is the brightest and fastest moving ‘star’ across the sky. It travels at 17,000 mph at an altitude of 265 miles. If you have not seen the ISS soar overhead…you have missed a wonderful spectacle.

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2013 annual report for Captain Rick’s ATRIDIM NEWS JOURNAL.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 5,900 times in 2013. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 5 trips to carry that many people.

Click here to see the complete report.

Captain Rick: After you click the above link, the fireworks explode into the sky for each day I posted a blog entry in 2013. The more people read and commented on the post…the bigger the fireworks display for that day. I had a few really big days with lots of fireworks. It gives me blogging inspiration for 2014.

After you click the above link, scroll down to see the stats. Here are a few highlights:

Top Viewing Sources: Facebook, Yahoo, GilbertWatch, EastValleyNewsNet, CWordJourney

Top Viewing Countries: Views from 68 Countries, led by the U.S., Canada and the UK

Top Commenters: Sandi Bartlett, Anita Christy, Gordon Ray, Ken Bosch, Bill Whitney. (This is the most important stat to me. I sincerely appreciate the comments and encouragement they provided during 2013).

Captain Rick: The Holdman Amazing Grace Christmas House on Christmas Street in Pleasant Grove, Utah presents the world’s most spectacular Christmas light display featuring 176 light channels and 45,000 multicolored lights synchronized to ‘Amazing Grace,’ ‘Music Box Dancer’ and other great musical numbers.

Captain Rick’s Christmas Lights Spectacular on YouTube: I have compiled the best of past Holdman Christmas light performances in a half hour playlist I present for your enjoyment below, via my YouTube site.

image

VIEWING INSTRUCTIONS: Click the image above … after you read this: This is a continuous performance that lasts about a half hour. When you click you will be transferred to Captain Rick’s YouTube site and my playlist will begin. Select your viewing quality. Most are available in 720p HD. Select the full screen icon at lower right. Turn your sound up. Then, do not touch anything, except to press ‘skip’ if you encounter an occasional ad. There is a few second blank spot at the end of ‘Music Box Dancer’. Be patient. The performance continues with a 14 minute complete show of the record 2010 Holdman Christmas Lights show and ends with a song by Judy Pancoast about the Holdman ‘House on Christmas Street’. ENJOY!

The Amazing Grace Christmas House was located in Pleasant Grove, Utah. Designed and programmed by Richard Holdman, the display started in 2006, but traffic became too much of an issue and is no longer running.  Richard has gone on to create Holdman Lighting which installs animated lighting displays around the world.

Richard Holdman: 2010 was the last year for our large display on our home. The traffic became to much along with some neighbor complaints but for the record there were many awesome neighbors that loved it and I really appreciate their support over the years.

Your appreciation is welcome: It took a bit of work to put this show together for your enjoyment. However, it was a tiny effort in comparison to the work that went into the Holdman light displays. If you enjoy it, I would be grateful to read your comment below. More so, I know the Holdmans would enjoy your comment.

Up to 12,000 holiday lights adorn his desert oasis every holiday season. Rumors have it that Santa uses his Oasis sea of lights as a homing beacon to guide his sleigh to Gilbert Arizona.

Merry Christmas to all of my wonderful friends around the world, Captain Rick

Captain Rick: Each day when I am on Flickr tending to my photos and photo groups, I am greeted by the Flickr team in a different language, when my mouse hoovers over my icon. Over the past many months I think I have received a greeting in every language spoken in every country on earth. It has been very educational.

Today I received a new greeting in a language I readily recognized. It is spoken by many of my friends that I meet on my daily morning walks. I congratulate the Flickr team for the huge smile that emerged upon my face when they greeted me with this today…

As a Flickr pioneer (paying member since January 2007), I appreciate the Flickr team for their great support and refinement over the years, especially the recent, totally new, awesome look and feel of Flickr. Your diligent efforts have propelled Flickr to become the most respected, quality home for photographic sharing.

Arizona’s Canyon Lake, originally uploaded by atridim.

Canyon Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in the world. Canyon Lake is one of four reservoirs that were formed by the damming of the Salt River in the U.S. state of Arizona.

The lake was formed by the Mormon Flat Dam, which was completed in 1925 after two years of construction. Canyon Lake, with a surface area of 950 acres (380 ha), is the third and smallest of four lakes created along the Salt River. Two others, Apache Lake and Roosevelt Lake are upstream. The fourth, Saguaro Lake, is downstream.

Canyon Lake lies approximately 15 miles (24 km) up the Apache Trail from Apache Junction, Arizona and 51 miles (82 km) east of Phoenix. It is within the Superstition Wilderness of Tonto National Forest and is a popular recreation area for the Phoenix metropolitan area. Recreation amenities include hiking trails, camping, and boating, all managed by the United States Forest Service. Canyon Lake is a popular stop on the way to Theodore Roosevelt Dam and Tortilla Flat, Arizona.
